These were years of tense \u2013 but certainly very interesting \u2013 musical life in Spain, in which great masters such as \u00d3scar Espl\u00e1 (who died while Marco was writing this concerto), Federico Mompou, Ernesto Halfter and Joaqu\u00edn Rodrigo lived and worked, at the same time as the masters of \u2018new music\u2019 were already emerging, led by Tom\u00e1s Marco, Carlos Cruz de Castro and Arturo Tamayo.
