José María Usandizaga actually composed the original Fantasy for Cello and Orchestra for cello and piano in 1908, and after his death it was orchestrated by his brother Ramón and premiered in this version in 1920. The composer developed this Fantasía with all the freedom that was granted to him, including passages of majestic rigour, full of life and passion, and phrases that have momentum and brilliant virtuosity, in the two sections of the work marked ‘Grave-Andante’ and ‘Allegro’. The cello displays its full tessitura throughout, from the lowest range to the highest, creating a tense yet magisterial atmosphere.
