Francisco Escudero’s Cello Concerto was premiered on 21st January 1972 at the Teatro Real, Madrid. To its composer it is an autobiographical reflection, giving a hint at his background. The orchestral arrangement is dazzlingly refreshing, based on the exploration of sonorities emanating from the microtonal technique of orchestral writing, intervallic fragmentation and acoustic treatment of the sounds using the inverted coloratura of the cello and the orchestra’s other concertante instruments, thus creating music that is fluid, and truly experienced. The cellist conveys the technical and spiritual character of the work, instilling in the strings the heartbeat, which becomes our heartbeat.
