Carmelo Bernaola’s Clamores y Secuencias for cello and orchestra was commissioned by the Centro para la Difusión de la Música Contemporánea and the Fundación Caja Madrid, in 1993 for the ninth edition of the Alicante International Contemporary Music Festival.

In 2000 the Quincena Musical Donostiarra (the San Sebastian International Festival of Music) paid tribute to Maestro Bernaola to celebrate his 70th birthday, and the recently revised version of Clamores y Secuencias was performed for the first time on 25th August. It took place in the Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastian, and was performed by Asier Polo and the Basque National Orchestra, conducted by Mario Venzago. This masterwork, surely one of the most beautiful and moving works that Carmelo Bernaola has left us, opens with a 15-bar introduction focused around the solo cellist’s first entry, between two bell-like chords.
